We all make choices in our lives when it comes to insignificant things but, when it comes to the critical aspects of our lives, decisions we know that matter, we never make those choices.
As humans, inertia is one of our preferred state of being. We love the status quo. We may not be happy with the way things are and might just be complaining about it the whole time, but we refrain from making difficult choices.
I’ve been one of those people as well for the longest time. I would crib endlessly but go back and do the same set of motions repeatedly for years. It is laughable when I look back at it now, but I remember it being no fun then. Why then? Why do we procrastinate the big decisions even when we know something’s amiss?
In retrospection, I believe my reason for inaction specifically was lack of awareness. When we do not know what we want, how would we ever muster the courage to do what needs to be done? In a world filled with distractions where we consume #ootd, #potd, and #votd every breathing moment, we have no time, capacity, or energy to look within to narrow down the cause of concern. We become one among the herd, waking up when told to, clocking away hours in front of a system and vegging out in front of the television once done. We consume, and we consume, without even realizing the time that is ticking away. Slowly slipping away from our hold.
But then, “When you have to make a choice and don’t make it, that in itself is a choice.”
William James
We might as well take a better-informed choice than let life happen to us. It is not rocket science, and there are no right or wrong answers but choose we must.
The next time you find yourself not so happy with the way things are. Pause. Reflect. Make that choice which matters most to you and see how life turns around.
