This week we have Sachin Chidambaran, lead trainer at Samaritans Mumbai, speaking to us on the Being Meraklis podcast.
Samaritans Mumbai is the first branch of the Samaritans, UK to be set out up outside of England. An organization that has been actively working in the field of mental health since 1968, they have a simple mission
“To ensure fewer deaths by suicide”
The past few months have definitely not helped as far as our mental health is concerned. Life as we know it has changed completely. A lot of things we loved doing are no longer an option and there are a lot more restrictions to take care of. The boundaries between work and life and are thinning down adding more pressure. There is a barrage of negative news coming in from every part of the world, that its natural to be triggered. I have received several DMs of individuals experiencing self-harm thoughts and I thought no better than Samaritan Mumbai team to address this.
Catch me in conversation with Sachin as we discuss suicide prevention. Can we as a society be aware and open to have such conversations and connect with those feeling isolated and cut-off? What is the purpose of hope really? How can each of us play a role to connect (really connect) with those around us and have deeper conversations?
The episode drives home a key message that feeling suicidal thoughts is normal and we as a society must help individuals process these emotions rather than shrugging it away so that the individual feels more connected to his/her surroundings
Also, if you feel that you can do more than just help your near and dear ones and would like to volunteer to work with Samaritans Mumbai in any capacity, you can visit the site here to know more details or write to them at samaritans.helpline@gmail.com.
