Are you constantly procrastinating things that you should be doing now and feeling more stress with every passing hour because not doing adds to the existing stress? We want to procrastinate at some point in our lives we don’t feel like working out today we don’t want to confront someone at work so we push it and push it until it becomes too late we don’t start studying because we feel overwhelmed and the longer we procrastinate the harder it is to start and we don’t do our projects until the very last minute before the deadline either because we really do not know where to start or how to go about it.
Most productive experts try to deal with procrastination that in itself was the problem but that’s the symptoms. We don’t need lessons in time management rather procrastination is emotional management our emotions come in the way of us not doing what we know we need to do. Think about the last time you procrastinated on a task. You realize that because we don’t procrastinate because we don’t know how to plan on time almost 90 – 95 per cent of us know how to plan and schedule but we do not do what do our task because we feel overwhelmed, confused, stressed, worried or even bored.
So if you are procrastinating first identify what areas are you procrastinating in is that big project at work you don’t know where to start or a conversation with a person which you know is going to turn into a fight. Identify the areas to ask yourself what feelings come up when you think about doing this task. Label them as precisely as possible if it’s fear dig deeper. Fear of what? Is it internal fears or external fears and how true are those fears? If it’s overwhelmed ask yourself which of the task are priorities and which can I let go of.
The third question that you should ask once you have feelings identified is what would make you feel comfortable doing this task? Do you need clarity on where to begin? Would you need to learn a skill or ask for help because you don’t know how to do it do you need more energy to do it or do you just need a plan to find the time to do it? Reflect on these questions and see how you can make the shift from non-doing to doing without too much emotional discomfort. Like someone has said
Time management is essentially pain management make sure that that’s easy and comfortable and fun for you to do things and you never have to procrastinate.
